Zada fell out this afternoon as I tried to get a nap (my skin kids have been really sick all week). I didn't think that we were going to get her back. We went to the vet school with her. Figured there was nothing the regular vet could do for her. I knew it was not going to be good when the small animal dr came out but when Antartica's cardiologist came out with him...well I just knew. She remembered us and Artic which made me feel good. So she told us that Zada is in heart failure and advanced stages of DCM. You would think that we would know all the signs of cardiomyopthy having been through it before but we missed it. We took Zada to the vet a few weeks ago and spent hundreds of dollars for them to tell us that they didn't hear any fluid in her lungs. Today they tell us that her lungs were full and it is also around her heart. She is still at the school. We opted to let her stay the night in ICU. They are going to keep her on a heart monitor all night and get her meds adjusted right. When we took Antartica in, they gave her 3 months to live and we had her for 18 months. I really hope that Zada responds as well to the meds. This is the second dog that I have had that has cardiomyopthy and the second one that the vet missed. If they weren't so great ith everything else then I would be more pissed. I guess my advice to anyone with a boxer would be that if you think something isn't right and the vet says they are fine...get a cardiologist to check them out. Even the small animal vet missed it to start with today. Please keep her in your prayers.

I'm so sorry Michelle. I know what it's like to have a poorly babe and you have had so much to worry about recently in such a short time. I'll be keeping you and Zada abd the whole pack in my prayers. I don't know how old Zasda is but just to give you some hope I'll remind you of Arbie's journey. He has epilepsy, hydrocephalus, liver failure, alopecia, infection after infection and wasn't expected to live more than three years - and here we are coming up to his fourth birthday! Having said that It does depend on the age of the dog and any underlying health problems. It's probably hard for vets to pick up on everything - they are equivelant to opur general practitioners - they can only guess at a diagnosis - then have to send you to a specialist (and even then they are only going by symptoms they have seen before). Many of Arbie's problems are rare so a vet wouldn't be able to pick up on them - they can only guess at what it might be. So I agree with you sticking with your vet if you tyrust them.

We were able to bring her home this afternoon. The cardiologist told us that yesterday when we brought her in that her heart was working at about 10%. They are amazed that she was functioning as well as she was. They are impressed with how she is taking to her meds. I hope that she conitinues to do well with them. She was sent home with a bag full of meds that she will get 2x a day. Some good news though....our cardiologist is expecting to get some teaching/grant money soon. She wants to test all my dogs and do a study on a gene that has been identified as being a cause of DCM in boxers. They are wondering about the gentics of it and since we have a whole family they want to use our dogs. It is a big plus for us since we could find problems before they get really bad, but I think that is also good for the boxer world. Thank you for you continued prayers for Zada and please keep your fingers crossed that we can get all the dogs tested.

More and more prayers coming your way. That is good news she was able to come home and seems to be responding to her meds. Keep fighting Zada! We are all here for you girly! Praying for your vet to get the grant money! That would be amazing if she could use your dogs! It would be perfect for her research and perfect for you too!

Pleased to hear Zada's home - continuing prayers that the meds will carry on helping! That's great news if your vets can carry out the testing - it will benefit all futrue boxer owners - it's just a shame you have to have had to go through the worry in order that it might help others in the future. I hope that I can acheive the same things through Arbie. It seems hard sometimes but I truly believe God put these dogs into our care knowing that we would take care of them but also go one step further to help other people and dogs in the future! You are doing a great job with your pack! ![]() The hugs are solely for you - we all need reasurance and hugs sometimes.

So happy to hear that Zada is better, continuing to pray for her and your family, skin and fur, and praying that the cardiologist gets the grant, what a wonderful legacy your dogs could be establishing. Tracy, you're absolutely correct in your belief that God gives these special dogs to those who can care for them AND help others, look what YOU and Stephanie have done for me with Shane. So Michelle, hang in there, while I'm sorry you're having to go through this, you never know when someone else will need your hard earned expertise. |
